ITINERARY

Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve: Paddle, explore, and craft your dream Amazon adventure! Navigate stunning rivers, encounter diverse wildlife, and master the art of chocolate making at Aguas Negras River Lodge. Unforgettable memories guaranteed!

DAY 1 – Lago Agrio – Aguarico River – Cuyabeno River – Aguas Negras River Lodge

  • Morning: Departure from Lago Agrio for a 2-hour drive to “Tierras Orientales” Village by the Aguarico River. Begin your Amazon Rainforest journey on a motorized canoe downstream along the scenic white water river.

  • Midday: Enjoy a delightful picnic lunch during the 2.5-hour navigation at the mouth of the Cuyabeno River. Opportunity for a refreshing swim.

  • Afternoon: Continue upstream along the Cuyabeno river (45 min) to reach Aguas Negras River Lodge. Look out for diverse wildlife, including pink and grey Freshwater Dolphins. Receive a warm welcome from our staff.

  • Evening: Embark on a short hike to observe giant insects, spiders, snakes, and savor the Amazon’s vibrant nocturnal sounds. Return to the Lodge for dinner.

DAY 2 - Aguas Negras River Lodge
  • Morning: After breakfast, journey upstream via motorized canoe along the Cuyabeno River to “Puerto Montufar.” Here, gear distribution, canoe loading, and a safety briefing precede a remarkable paddling experience downstream on the Blackwater River. Spot wildlife such as Monkeys, Parrots, and Macaws during the approximately 5-hour journey. Enjoy a picnic lunch and optional swim.
  • Afternoon: Venture on a hike through the primary forest, encountering the towering Kapoc tree. Return for leisure time at the lodge. Later, embark on a nocturnal wildlife exploration on the Cuyabeno River by motorized canoe. Look for Night birds, Snakes, Bats, Caimans, and Frogs.
  • Evening: Return to the Lodge for dinner.
DAY 3 - Aguas Negras River Lodge
  • Morning: Take a morning motorized canoe trip to “Saladero” (Salt Licks) where Parrots gather for minerals. With luck, witness this natural spectacle. After breakfast, embark on a rainforest hike led by an expert guide, exploring the rich ecology. Return to the Lodge via a relaxing 40-minute paddle and enjoy a refreshing swim.
  • Lunch: Experience “Maito,” a traditional Kichwa dish consisting of wrapped fish meat, palmito, Yuca, seasoned with salt in bijao leaves.
  • Afternoon: Leisure time at the camp. In the late afternoon, paddle downstream on the Cuyabeno River, enjoying the stunning sunset over the landscape. Return to the Lodge for dinner.
  • Paddling Distance: 9KM (5.6 miles)
DAY 4 – Aguas Negras River Lodge to Secoya Indigenous Territory
  • Morning: After breakfast, paddle downstream along the Cuyabeno River, providing excellent wildlife watching opportunities. Return to the lodge via motorized canoe to prepare for departure.
  • Afternoon: Following lunch, navigate downstream on the Cuyabeno River toward its mouth at the Aguarico River, increasing chances to spot wildlife, including freshwater dolphins. Continue upstream on the white waters of the Aguarico River. Arrive at the Secoya Native territory where you’ll spend the night in comfortable tents at the river’s edge, offering a stunning view of the Aguarico river.
  • Evening: Before dinner, take an exciting night walk.
  • Daily Navigation Time: 3 hours by motorized canoe
DAY 5 – Secoya Indigenous Territory to Lago Agrio or Coca
  • Morning: Enjoy an insightful walk led by a Secoya Indigenous guide, learning about the medicinal plants vital for the native people’s survival. Participate in making Casabe bread from Manihot or Yuca roots, a significant element of the Indigenous diet. Engage in the process of making homemade chocolate from dry Cocoa beans. Lunch will consist of Casabe bread and chocolate.
  • Afternoon: Take a brief motorized canoe trip to Tierras Orientales village. Your car will then drive you back to Lago Agrio or Coca, with an estimated arrival at 4 pm. There, you can continue your transportation back to Quito.
  • Daily Navigation Time: 40 minutes

    • Pick-up/Drop-off in Coca city incurs an additional charge of $60 for your group. No extra fees apply for Lago Agrio city.
    • No flights available to Lago Agrio.
  • If you travel by car, you must be in the cities of coca or lago agrio on the departure date at 9am
